Violence broke out outside a school board meeting in Glendale, California, as LGBTQ+ activists and right-wing groups clashed over the recognition of June as Pride Month. The Glendale Unified School District, responsible for 25,000 students, convened to discuss inclusive policies, which they unanimously approved. However, the public comment section was abruptly cut short due to escalating violence outside the building, prompting police intervention to ensure the attendees’ safety.
The scenes captured on social media displayed a gathering of hundreds of individuals on both sides of the debate outside the school district headquarters on North Jackson Street. LGBTQ+ activists and allies proudly waved Pride flags and brandished signs advocating for the protection of transgender children. In contrast, opponents of the school district’s inclusive policies held American flags and donned white t-shirts bearing the phrase “leave our kids alone,” which they chanted in unison.
While law enforcement officials stated that the majority of the protest remained peaceful, a small faction engaged in violent behavior, resulting in three arrests on various charges, including the unlawful use of pepper spray and obstruction of officers. Videos shared on Twitter captured the intensity of the clashes as opposing sides exchanged punches and kicks, with police officers working to de-escalate the situation and separate the brawling parties.
During the meeting, parents expressed a range of sentiments, with some expressing gratitude for the school board’s efforts towards inclusivity, citing personal experiences of discrimination faced by their queer children. One parent, who had never spoken before, emphasized her presence as an actual parent to counter the disbelief expressed by opposing individuals. However, an opposing viewpoint was also voiced, arguing for a focus on academics rather than sexual orientation within schools.

Prior to the meeting, the Glendale Unified School District felt compelled to address misinformation regarding its curriculum, releasing a statement and fact sheet. The district sought to dispel intentional and harmful disinformation circulating about LGBTQIA+ curriculum, sex education, and support for transgender and gender non-conforming youth. The fact sheet outlined the curriculum content and broader policies related to the rights of transgender students, including the use of preferred pronouns and access to facilities such as locker rooms.
The Glendale Police Department acknowledged the right to peaceful assembly and expression of opinions but intervened when the situation escalated beyond peaceful bounds. Despite attempts to calm the situation, a dispersal order was issued in the early evening. A parent named Megan, in an interview with the Los Angeles Times, described the anti-LGBTQ+ rally as “heartbreaking,” contrasting her positive experiences within the community and her child’s education.
The Glendale Police Department expressed its commitment to open dialogue and constructive engagement while acknowledging and respecting the rights of individuals. The department emphasized the importance of fostering positive relationships and collaborating with community leaders and organizations to address concerns and find common ground.
