Over the weekend, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) found herself at the center of controversy when she and her companion were escorted out of a performance of the musical Beetlejuice at Denver’s Buell Theatre. Multiple complaints from other audience members alleged vaping, singing, unauthorized recording, and causing a disturbance during the show.
The incident, which occurred during the touring production of the Broadway musical, escalated after warnings during intermission had failed to curtail their disruptive behavior. Security officials received numerous complaints about the pair being loud and recording parts of the show, which is against theater policy. When asked to leave, they initially refused, prompting the intervention of venue staff.
Surveillance footage shows the congresswoman and her companion being escorted out of the venue by security guards. Boebert’s apparent resistance led to exchanges with security, during which she raised objections and mentioned her connections, including being “on the board” and threatening to contact the mayor.
Denver Police eventually arrived and waited until Boebert and her companion left the scene. While the incident report did not initially name Boebert, her campaign office later confirmed her involvement. Boebert’s campaign manager, Drew Sexton, acknowledged that she used her cellphone to take a photo, unaware that it was prohibited. Sexton humorously remarked that Boebert was indeed a supporter of the performing arts and encouraged others to see Beetlejuice.
This incident is not the congresswoman’s first brush with controversy and law enforcement. Before her election, Boebert faced multiple arrests between 2010 and 2015 for minor crimes. Moreover, in March 2022, she engaged in a heated argument with fellow Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, raising concerns about potential violence. In subsequent months, incidents involving her husband and teenage son further drew attention. Boebert filed for divorce from her husband in May 2022.
Rep. Boebert’s eventful personal life continues to make headlines, even as she carries out her political duties on Capitol Hill. The recent disturbance at the Beetlejuice musical adds another chapter to her storied controversies.
In a climate where political figures are under increasing scrutiny, Boebert’s disruptive behavior raises questions about decorum and responsibility among elected officials.
