In the face of mounting opposition and legal challenges from Republican lawmakers, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has restated its unwavering support for gender-affirming medical care for transgender children. With a unanimous vote, the AAP’s board of directors, representing 67,000 pediatricians, reaffirmed its 2018 position on these vital treatments. In a bid to bolster their stance further, the board also took measures to provide additional documents, including clinical and technical reports, while initiating an external review of relevant research to support pediatricians on the frontline.
Mark Del Monte, the CEO of the AAP, emphasized the board’s concern about the increasing restrictions that transgender youth face when seeking evidence-based healthcare. As more than 20 states have already enacted laws that limit or outright ban gender-affirming care for transgender minors, the issue has become a battleground for legal challenges across the nation. In his statement, Del Monte decried these state-enforced restrictions as an unprecedented intrusion of government into the realm of healthcare, demanding the need for a transparent and equitable process.
The legal landscape surrounding gender-affirming care remains contentious, with ongoing lawsuits in many states. Federal judges have temporarily halted bans in Alabama and Indiana, while in Arkansas, a federal judge declared the ban unconstitutional, triggering an appeal from the state. Notably, the judge cited the positions of medical groups, including the AAP, in his ruling against the ban, signaling the significance of expert medical opinions in these legal battles.
Critics who oppose gender-affirming treatments for children argue that minors lack the capacity to make such crucial decisions about their own futures. However, major medical organizations, including the AAP and the American Medical Association (AMA), firmly stand behind the safety and efficacy of these treatments when administered correctly. Both the AAP and the AMA advocate for children’s access to gender-affirming care while acknowledging the need for further guidance on age-specific considerations.
