Conservative commentator Matt Walsh has announced that he will no longer post videos on YouTube due to the platform’s “demonetization” of his content, citing his continued misgendering of trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney. Speaking at the University of Iowa, Walsh revealed that he had committed a series of alleged violations of YouTube’s terms of service and ad partnership guidelines. Walsh claims that he earns over $100,000 a month from his YouTube videos, making demonetization a significant financial blow.
Walsh has accused YouTube of trying to silence him, pointing to the recent hacking of his Twitter account and a Media Matters article that highlighted past controversies. Walsh claims that his show will no longer be available on YouTube from next week, which he sees as being “banished forever from the platform” and being taken out of the national conversation.
Walsh has also stated that being demonetized is a sign of success, as it demonstrates the effectiveness of his strategy against what he sees as a “threat” to his ideology. Walsh has been an active opponent of trans rights, claiming that it is a “hill worth dying on”.
YouTube has yet to comment on the situation.
On the day before his speech at the University of Iowa, Walsh’s Twitter account was hacked. The hacker tweeted several messages, including attacks on other conservative media figures. The hacker also claimed to have accessed Walsh’s Google and Microsoft accounts.
