A new book titled “And Don’t F&%k It Up: An Oral History of RuPaul’s Drag Race (The First Ten Years)” by Maria Elena Fernandez has unveiled intriguing behind-the-scenes details about the production of the Emmy-winning reality drag competition series. Among the many captivating stories featured in the book, one that stands out is the account of Valentina’s notorious masked lip sync during the ninth season of Drag Race, which ultimately led to her elimination for not knowing the lyrics.
The book, enriched with quotes from producers and past contestants, delves into the perplexing circumstances surrounding Valentina’s lip sync performance to Ariana Grande’s hit song “Greedy”. Shea Couleé, a fellow competitor in season nine, shared her recollection of the event, stating that as the music started, confusion permeated the room. As the seconds ticked by, uncertainty grew among the queens as they exchanged perplexed glances, pondering whether Valentina would remove her mask or not. Even Michelle, one of the show’s judges, turned to RuPaul, while the crew members exchanged bewildered looks.
Randy Barbato, the executive producer of World of Wonder, added further insight, revealing the tension behind the scenes. While Barbato enjoyed the suspense, he acknowledged that the show had to intervene and that RuPaul would handle the situation. Barbato expressed mixed feelings, as Valentina was beloved among the team, but there were indications backstage that she might not have been adequately prepared for the challenge.
Since the unforgettable lip sync, Valentina made a triumphant return to compete on All Stars 4, where she redeemed herself with another Ariana Grande song, “Into You”. Although she didn’t claim victory in that season, Valentina’s career has thrived with notable roles in projects such as Rent: Live, In the Heights, The House of Flowers, and La Usurpadora: The Musical. Currently, she is set to co-host and judge the first season of Drag Race México alongside Lolita Banana, solidifying her status as a fan-favorite within the Drag Race universe.
The allure of RuPaul’s Drag Race continues to captivate audiences, and fans eagerly anticipate each episode of the ongoing eighth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars, airing Fridays on Paramount+. Valentina’s unforgettable lip sync remains etched in the show’s history, exemplifying the exhilarating and unexpected moments that define this beloved reality competition.
