The new Fox anthology series ‘Accused’ takes a unique approach to examining the lives of those on trial for crimes. Created by Howard Gordon, known for his work on Homeland and 24, the show focuses on the perspective of the accused, rather than the legal system. The series premiered on January 23rd and has quickly become a hit, with high ratings and a growing fanbase.
The upcoming episode, “Robyn’s Story,” is set to air on February 21st and is directed by Tony and Emmy award-winning Billy Porter. The episode follows drag performer Robyn, played by J. Harrison Ghee, whose relationship with a closeted queer man leads her to be suspected of a crime. The episode explores themes of toxic masculinity and queer shame, as well as touching on police violence against Black queer bodies.
While the episode deals with serious topics, it also showcases the joy of the Black queer community, a perspective that is often ignored in mainstream media. Ghee’s performance as Robyn is both heartfelt and energetic, with Porter taking time to explore the tender moments between Robyn and her boyfriend Jamie, played by Chris Coy.
Porter has noted that ‘Accused’ will be airing in homes across the country, including in “middle America,” making it an important opportunity to bring diverse voices to a wider audience. With its unique approach to examining the criminal justice system, and its focus on the lives of the accused, ‘Accused’ is an important addition to the television landscape.
Don’t miss “Robyn’s Story” on Fox on February 21st.
