Members of the Nassau County Republican Committee in New York, along with local elected Republicans and sitting members of Congress, have called for the resignation of gay Republican Rep. George Santos. The call for resignation was made during a press conference on Wednesday, where Nassau County Republican Committee Chairman Joseph G. Cairo announced Santos’ ouster from the local party.
During the press conference, Chairman Cairo accused Santos of deceiving the Nassau Republican Party, voters of the third district, other candidates, his opponents, and media members in the last election, and stated that Santos has disqualified himself from serving. He further said, “He has no place in the Republican Committee, nor should he serve in public service or as an elected official. He’s not welcome here at Republican headquarters for meetings or any of our events.”
In recent weeks, Santos has come under fire for lying about significant parts of his biography. He is currently under multiple criminal investigations in New York and ethics investigations by the Federal Election Commission. Despite the calls for resignation, Santos has stated that he has no plans to quit Congress and he tweeted on Monday afternoon that “I will NOT resign!”.
