The City Council of Huntington Beach, California, has voted to remove the LGBTQ+ Pride flag from display at City Hall in the spring. Despite vocal public opposition, the council voted 4-3 to adopt a list of approved flags that excluded the rainbow banner.
Council member Pat Burns, who proposed the new list, stated in a report that the city should “avoid actions that could easily or mistakenly be perceived as divisive.”
Under the approved ordinance, only flags representing the United States, California, Orange County, and the city of Huntington Beach, as well as the POW/MIA flag and those representing the six branches of U.S. armed forces, can be displayed on city property.
