Australian state of Victoria’s senior government representative, Dan Andrews, delivered a powerful speech condemning anti-LGBTQ+ protestors and neo-Nazis who forced the cancellation of a drag queen library event in the city of Monash. Scheduled for May 19 to celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia, the event aimed to expose children to diverse role models and foster acceptance, love, and respect for diversity.
Intimidation Tactics and Online Misinformation
Misinformation about the event spread online, leading to hundreds of anti-LGBTQ+ and pro-drag protestors attending a Monash city council meeting in late April. Organized by alt-right and conspiracy theorist groups, the anti-LGBTQ+ attendees hurled slurs and insults at pro-drag individuals and city council members. The council ultimately decided to cancel the event due to safety concerns after receiving death threats and consulting with Victoria Police.
A Call for Love, Respect, and Safety
In his speech, Dan Andrews expressed his support for the LGBTQ+ community, emphasizing that equality is non-negotiable and that hate speech will not be tolerated. Andrews suggested that those who hold such hateful views should leave Australia and find a place where their views might be worth something, making a reference to Florida’s anti-LGBTQ+ political environment. The senior government representative affirmed his commitment to ensuring the safety and respect of every individual in Victoria, regardless of their identity or who they love.
