Marvel fans are eagerly anticipating the release of “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries,” the spin-off series based on the beloved character Agatha Harkness from the hit show “WandaVision.” While the show’s release has seen multiple delays and name changes, fans recently got a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the series in the Blu-ray release of “WandaVision.”
“Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” continues the story from “WandaVision,” with Agatha Harkness (played by Kathryn Hahn) trapped in the town of Westview under a curse, living the life of a suburban housewife. In a recently released minute-and-a-half clip, Kathryn Hahn and the “WandaVision” team express their excitement about the project.
Hahn commented, “We knew we had something special on our hands, but I think we were all flabbergasted by the reception. People were hungry for something that felt nostalgic and something that everybody could sit around and watch and wait for on Friday nights. Friday nights! Like who stays at home on Friday nights and watches something with their family? To be playing a witch in the MCU is amazing.”
While the clip didn’t reveal much about the storyline, it did provide fans with a first look at Joe Locke, known for his role as the sweet gay teen Charlie Spring in “Heartstopper,” in character. Although Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed Locke’s role in “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries,” fans speculate that he may be portraying the character Billy Kaplan, also known as the superhero Wiccan.
Wiccan is the son of Agatha Harkness’s enemy, Wanda Maximoff, and is one of the most prominent gay characters in the Marvel comic book universe. Locke has previously hinted that his character in “Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” “doesn’t fit the superhero norm.”
In the behind-the-scenes bonus clip, Joe Locke and Kathryn Hahn can be seen in character, potentially indicating that they are on the same team.
“Agatha: Darkhold Diaries” boasts a stellar cast, including Aubrey Plaza, Patti LuPone, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Debra Jo Rupp, and others. Originally scheduled for release in winter, the series is now set to premiere in autumn 2024 on Disney+, just in time for Halloween. Marvel’s LGBTQ+ following is eagerly anticipating the series, hoping to see more LGBTQ+ representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
