Former UK Prime Minister Liz Truss, who held the shortest-serving prime ministerial term in British history, has shared her hope for a Republican victory in the upcoming US presidential election in a Wall Street Journal column. Truss, also a former foreign secretary, expressed her aspirations for a Republican leader to return to the White House in 2024.
Truss cited the leadership of Ronald Reagan in the 1980s and the end of the Cold War as examples of American leadership that she believes the world could benefit from today. She wrote, “The world would benefit from more of that kind of American leadership today. I hope that a Republican will be returned to the White House in 2024.”
While Truss did not explicitly name any Republican candidate in her article, former President Donald Trump is considered a clear favorite for the Republican primaries. Truss has previously described Trump as “very good” and “very nice,” and Trump has spoken highly of her.
Many of the Republican candidates, including Trump, have been associated with disturbing anti-LGBTQ+ views. In February, Trump opened his bid for his party’s nomination by promising to ban gender-affirming healthcare for trans youth, attacking hospitals that provide such treatments, and pushing for a federal law recognizing only two genders.
Despite similar anti-LGBTQ+ agendas, Trump is currently leading in the polls ahead of other Republican candidates, such as Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.
Truss’ column was published during her visit to Washington DC with the Conservative Friends of Ukraine. In the article, she also addressed global threats from China, Iran, and Russia and called for countering ideologies that undermine Western values.
Liz Truss was removed from her position as UK Prime Minister after proposing a mini-budget that included tax cuts benefiting the wealthy, which generated significant criticism and economic uncertainty.
