An LGBTQ+ activist, Ada Cable, has come forward to recount a harrowing incident of assault during a counter-protest at the Honor Oak pub in London. Cable, who sustained severe injuries, including a mild concussion, two black eyes, and a possible broken nose, described being punched multiple times by an anti-drag protestor. The assault occurred amidst a tense atmosphere fueled by the presence of Turning Point UK (TPUK), an offshoot of an American right-wing group known for its alignment with former US president Donald Trump.
According to Cable, the situation escalated when TPUK arrived at the pub, hurling derogatory slurs like “pedophiles” and “groomer” at the counter-protestors, who were predominantly non-binary, trans, and queer individuals. In an attempt to shield themselves, Cable’s group raised their flags as a symbolic form of protection. However, the situation quickly turned violent as the anti-drag protestors began snapping the flags and throwing projectiles, including plastic bottles filled with water and even one made of glass.
Cable recounted clinging to her flag when an assailant struck her twice on the left side of her face, resulting in blood streaming down her face. She recalled feeling disoriented for a couple of hours and experiencing post-concussion symptoms. Shortly after the attack, a Territorial Support Group (TSG) officer intervened to prevent further damage to the flags, but approximately 30 minutes later, another officer reportedly started grabbing and shoving people, ultimately delivering a punch to Cable’s right eye.
Following the incident, Cable sought medical attention at the hospital, where a mild concussion was confirmed. She was advised to return for a tetanus shot and a follow-up with a specialist to assess her possible broken nose. Cable expressed her strong opposition to the presence of far-right groups in Lewisham, stating, “I don’t want fascists in Lewisham, TPUK or otherwise. They attacked us without provocation, they’re not safe, and they’re clearly not welcome.”
This disturbing incident has raised concerns about the safety of LGBTQ+ individuals participating in protests and the role of the police in maintaining order. The Metropolitan Police initially denied any involvement in Cable’s injuries, but later acknowledged the possibility that she may have been hurt during an arrest. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in the fight for acceptance and equality.
