Rapper Lil Nas X recently faced a significant backlash from the LGBTQ+ community after making a joke about transitioning in a now-deleted tweet. The Grammy-winning artist posted a photo of a woman who looked similar to him with the caption, “The surgery was a success.” The post was deemed insensitive and offensive, with many in the community stating that it mocked the trans community, which is already struggling with hate from mainstream media and politicians.

I’m no longer a fan.

These events came in the wake of many legislative attacks on the LGBTQ+ community in the US this year, including Tennessee politicians outlawing drag performances in the presence of children and banning them from occurring within 1,000ft of schools, public parks, or places of worship. The Trevor Project also conducted a recent study, which found that 25 percent of young Black trans and non-binary people in the US have attempted to take their own lives.

The backlash against Lil Nas X’s tweet led to criticism from one Twitter user who stated, “You’re a gay cis male, why are you making transitioning a punchline of a joke?” Lil Nas X initially responded defensively but later issued an apology, saying, “Apologies to the trans community I definitely handled that situation with anger instead of considering why it was not cool. Much love to you guys. Sorry.”

However, Lil Nas X then backtracked and mocked a Black trans woman who called him out on Twitter, prompting criticism from many in the community. Some have pointed out that Lil Nas X has a track record of making uncomfortable jokes, such as pretending to be pregnant. While some have stated that his trolling has gone too far, others believe that the anger should be reserved for those responsible for the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

In conclusion, the backlash against Lil Nas X’s tweet highlights the importance of sensitivity and respect towards the trans community, particularly in light of the challenges they are already facing. It also raises questions about the role of public figures in promoting positive attitudes towards marginalized communities and the impact of their actions on their fans and followers.
