Liverpool has pledged to host Kyiv’s annual pride march, standing in solidarity with Ukraine after the ban imposed following the Russian invasion. The decision comes as Liverpool seeks to continue the legacy of Eurovision by joining forces with KyivPride, organizers announced. Last year, Liverpool witnessed the vibrant celebration of pride as approximately 15,000 people filled the streets, exuding an atmosphere of music, dance, and colorful costumes.
In an increasingly interconnected world, the demand for the right to live freely and happily resonates across LGBT+ communities, regardless of geographical boundaries. Andi Herring, the head of the Liverpool City Region Pride Foundation, expressed the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Even in the UK, we are all aware of how easily these rights can be backtracked on or removed entirely, which is why we are proud to share our march with Pride this year with the LGBT+ communities of Ukraine. It is a message of solidarity, unity, and hope for people here in Liverpool and in Kyiv.”
KyivPride, established in 2012 as Ukraine’s largest LGBT+ event, faced the setback of the Russian invasion stripping away their right to march. However, the power of international solidarity offers a glimmer of hope to keep their cause alive. Lenny Emson, a founder member of KyivPride, called upon communities across the United Kingdom and Europe to rally behind their movement, emphasizing the need for support.
Councillor Harry Doyle highlighted Liverpool’s voice of compassion, passion, and solidarity, stating, “What better way to ensure the legacy of Eurovision continues than by using our city’s voice and sharing it with those who are currently prevented from doing so.” The upcoming March with Pride, scheduled for Saturday, July 29, invites everyone to join in the walking march, promoting inclusivity and acceptance. It serves as a symbol of unity, bridging geographical distances and affirming the shared pursuit of equality.
Liverpool’s decision to host Kyiv’s annual pride march showcases the strength of international camaraderie, reinforcing the fundamental principles of LGBT+ rights and freedom. This collaborative endeavor marks an inspiring message of hope, resilience, and support, not only for the communities of Liverpool and Kyiv but also for LGBT+ individuals worldwide. By uniting voices and advocating for change, these two cities stand as beacons of solidarity, reminding the world of the imperative nature of equality and acceptance for all.
