Renowned actress and lesbian icon Miriam Margolyes recently shared a touching update on her plans to move in with her partner of 56 years, Heather Sutherland. This heartwarming revelation comes amidst Margolyes’ upcoming role as the villainous Beep the Meep in the Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials and the release of her second memoir, “Oh Miriam!” in September.
Margolyes’ autobiography delves into her illustrious showbiz career and offers insights into her personal life, including her civil partnership with Australian historian Heather Sutherland, whom she met while working on a BBC radio drama in the late 1960s.
Despite their enduring and loving relationship, the couple has lived apart, with Margolyes in London and Sutherland in Amsterdam. Margolyes explained their choice in a recent interview for Vogue’s Pride edition, stating, “We were able to lead our lives without diminishing them. I didn’t want her to have to give up anything, and I didn’t want to give up anything. I wanted my cake and I wanted to eat it too. And so far, it’s worked.”
However, during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Margolyes shared her desire to change this status quo, emphasizing the urgency of their decision due to their age. “We are together, but we live apart. She is in Amsterdam, and I am in London, but now we want to live together,” she said. “I really do want to live with her because we are old, and we haven’t got much time left. It is silly to live apart.”
Margolyes’ heartfelt announcement has been met with warm reception, reflecting the enduring power of love. Her story serves as a reminder that love knows no boundaries, and the journey towards togetherness is a testament to the enduring strength of their relationship.
