Celeste Barber, the acclaimed Australian comedian and co-creator of the popular Netflix series “Wellmania,” has revealed that the streaming giant has decided not to renew the show for a second season. The eight-part series, co-created by Barber, Brigid Delaney, and Benjamin Law, was inspired by Brigid’s non-fiction book, “Wellmania: Misadventures in the Search for Wellness.” Barber played the role of Liv Healy, an Australian food writer, in the series, which gained significant international recognition, even securing a spot on Netflix’s global top 10 list.
Despite its initial success, Netflix executives have chosen not to proceed with a second season, citing concerns about the show’s viewership numbers. Barber expressed her disappointment, saying, “I thought it smashed it. But I don’t understand how it works. This industry is kind of bulls**t.” While acknowledging that there are more pressing issues in the world, she also recognized the interest and support from fans of the series.
The first season of “Wellmania” ended with one of the main characters in the hospital, leaving fans curious about their fate. Liv’s brother, Gaz, and his fiancé, Dalbert, who were set to embark on their married life, will also remain unseen in further episodes. Celeste Barber and the show’s creators had envisioned ideas for a second season, but those plans will now remain unfulfilled.
Reflecting on her time with the show, Barber expressed her fondness for the character of Liv Healy, stating, “I’m bummed I can no longer explore that excellent character of Liv Healy.” While “Wellmania” fans may be disappointed by the news, Barber suggests turning to other shows for entertainment, with a playful nod to the classic sitcom “Friends.”
As the curtain falls on “Wellmania,” fans can still enjoy the first season, which remains available for streaming on Netflix. While the series won’t see a continuation, its impact on viewers and its place in the realm of LGBTQ+ representation in media will not be forgotten.
