Nikki Haley, former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador, has thrown her hat into the ring for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Haley announced her candidacy via Twitter and aims to be the first female and first person of Indian descent to hold the office. Donald Trump, Haley’s previous boss and fellow Republican, has also confirmed he will run for the presidency.
In her promotional video, Haley focuses on unity, saying “even on our worst day, we are blessed to live in America.” However, she is known for holding anti-LGBTQ+ views and has supported anti-abortion groups that aim to strip away bodily autonomy. Haley is quoted as saying that if trans rights are not stopped, “the achievements of so many brave women over so many years will be erased. That’s wrong. It’s insulting. And women know it… [but] they’re just afraid to speak out because they know they’ll be silenced and called bigots.”
Haley’s decision to run could benefit Donald Trump, as she is seen as likely to take votes away from other potential Republican candidates such as Ron DeSantis.
