Aura Mayari, a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15, has shared that not knowing the lyrics to her lip-sync battle with Jax is what led to her elimination from the series. She spilled the tea in her exit interview with Entertainment Weekly following an acting challenge in the Daytona Wind sequel in episode seven. Although her performance was one of the best of the season so far, it landed her in the bottom two with Jax, despite her previous week’s win, as they performed to Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Sweetest Pie”. Mayari hilariously admitted to Entertainment Weekly’s Joey Nolfi that she had forgotten the words, leading to her elimination as the sixth queen to be chopped from the show.
Mayari admitted that she was terrified to go up against Jax, who seemed to have the pop collaboration word-perfect, and was nervous about memorizing the rap lyrics, as they are usually tricky. She also clarified her recent comments during a viewing party of episode six, where she said she wasn’t close to fellow competitors Luxx Noir London or Mistress Isabelle Brooks, which they had taken exception to on Twitter. Mayari explained that there was no bad blood between them and that her comments were misinterpreted.
RuPaul’s Drag Race will go back to 90-minute-long episodes, starting from 11 March. Mayari’s misfortune at the lip-sync battle was a reminder of the challenges faced by contestants, especially as they make their way through a very competitive environment.
