In a recent announcement, the CW confirmed the cancellation of its highly anticipated live-action Powerpuff Girls reboot, which was set to bring a fresh and queer perspective to the beloved animated series. The decision came as part of a series of significant changes introduced by the new President of Entertainment, Brad Schwartz.
Initially promoted as a gritty and adult adaptation, similar to the network’s successful show Riverdale, the Powerpuff reboot aimed to explore mature themes while embracing inclusivity. One of its groundbreaking aspects was the casting of a nonbinary actor to portray the iconic character Buttercup. However, despite the promising premise, leaked set photos and script snippets triggered an outpouring of negativity across the internet.
Although the project faced widespread criticism, it’s essential to acknowledge the exceptional talent of the cast and creative team involved. The series boasted an impressive lineup, featuring Chloe Bennet from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Dove Cameron from Schmigadoon!, and the talented nonbinary actor Yanna Perrault as Buttercup. Accomplished writers Diablo Cody (known for Juno and One Mississippi) and Heather Regnier were set to bring their expertise to the script, with Greg Berlanti (renowned for The Flash) serving as executive producer.
Unfortunately, a leaked script containing controversial jokes touching on triggering topics, leaking of sensitive material, and outdated references to social media platforms such as Facebook, further fueled the negative sentiment surrounding the show. The backlash against adult reboots or reinterpretations of beloved children’s properties ultimately sealed the fate of the pilot, extinguishing the potential this project once held.
While the cancellation is disheartening, there’s no denying the remarkable synergy between the cast and creative team. The hope remains that these talented individuals will have future opportunities to collaborate, albeit perhaps steering clear of gritty adaptations of beloved childhood cartoons. The Powerpuff Girls reboot had the potential to break new ground, and it’s a shame to see it fall short of its aspirations.
