In an effort to preserve the vibrant history of LGBTQIA+ communities in Victoria, multidisciplinary artist Luciano, in collaboration with George Keats and the support of the Australian Queer Archives, has embarked on an ambitious project known as Queer-Ways. This initiative aims to map and document significant sites and stories that have played a vital role in the lives of LGBTQIA+ individuals throughout Victoria, Australia.
Queer-Ways draws inspiration from the iconic “Melways” and is akin to retracing queer footprints across the state. By meticulously mapping the cartography of Victoria, this project identifies and celebrates crucial locations where LGBTQIA+ individuals have found a sense of belonging, acceptance, and safety. The project began in Melbourne and has since expanded its reach to regional areas, including Daylesford, Mildura, and Wodonga, where it has successfully documented the rich tapestry of queer experiences.
The project’s expansion coincides with the approach of Victoria’s Pride event in 2024, with Ballarat, Geelong, and Shepparton next on the agenda. Queer-Ways is driven by the desire to collect and preserve the diverse stories of LGBTQIA+ communities living in regional and rural Victoria, offering representation and validation to those who may feel isolated in these areas.
Deb Lord, executive producer of the LGBTQIA+ variety show LaNCE TV in Ballarat, underscores the significance of Queer-Ways in spotlighting queerness in regional areas. Lord believes that this project provides crucial visibility to rainbow communities in regional Victoria, acknowledging their presence and contributions to the broader LGBTQIA+ narrative.
Sam McColl, a native of Ararat, emphasizes the importance of the Queer-Ways project in rewriting Australian history accurately. By unearthing forgotten or misrepresented stories, the project sheds light on the pivotal role played by LGBTQIA+ individuals, particularly trans people, in the fight for rights and recognition. McColl believes that understanding this history is essential to inform ongoing struggles for equality and acceptance.
Luciano, one of the project’s masterminds, envisions Queer-Ways as an evolving endeavor that continues to expand its scope. He encourages members of the queer community across the state to contribute their own stories and significant sites to this invaluable project, ensuring that regional queer communities receive the representation and acknowledgment they deserve.
