Queer Screen has given a tantalizing glimpse of what’s in store for audiences in Sydney from February 15-29, 2024, at the 31st Mardi Gras Film Festival. Following the live screenings, there will be an online on-demand festival encore available nationwide from March 1-11, 2024.
Organizers have promised a diverse array of LGBTIQ+ stories, including Australian and Sydney premieres from around the world. These films will be showcased at venues such as Event Cinemas George Street, Dendy Cinemas Newtown, Ritz Cinemas Randwick, and more locations yet to be announced. The complete festival program will be unveiled on January 10, 2024.
Festival director Lisa Rose expressed her excitement, highlighting the flourishing world of queer cinema that explores a myriad of unique and compelling narratives related to the LGBTIQ+ experience, both real and imaginary.
Highlights from the Lineup
One of the most eagerly anticipated films is the Sydney premiere of “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe.” Adapted from Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s celebrated young adult novel, this coming-of-age tale offers a nostalgic, sun-kissed portrayal of friendship and self-discovery.
“All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White” is another notable entry, winning the Teddy Award for best queer film at Berlinale. It tells a gradual, heartfelt love story between two men as they navigate the streets of Lagos, Nigeria.
For fans of groundbreaking series like “Pose” and “Transparent,” the Australian premiere of “Monica” promises a powerful exploration of family and forgiveness. Transgender actress Trace Lysette shares the screen with screen legend Patricia Clarkson in this intimate and intricate narrative.
Fashion enthusiasts will be delighted by the Sydney premiere of “Happy Clothes: A Film About Patricia Field.” The documentary provides an intriguing glimpse into the life and creative process of iconic stylist Patricia Field, known for her work on “The Devil Wears Prada” and Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic tutu.
“Mutt” follows the eventful 24 hours in the life of Feña, a twenty-something trans man in New York City. Featuring a Sundance Special Jury prize-winning performance from non-binary actor Lio Mehiel, the film explores Feña’s reconnection with his ex-boyfriend, sister, and father since coming out.
Additionally, “Cora Bora,” a bittersweet queer comedy featuring internet comedian turned “Hacks” scene-stealer Meg Stalter, offers a humorous take on the life of a struggling musician.
