Internationally acclaimed actor and producer Salma Hayek is set to bring holiday cheer and a message of love and acceptance to audiences this year with her latest project. The Spanish-language film, titled El Sabor de la Navidad, directed by Alejandro Lozano, weaves together three distinct Christmas stories, each grappling with the delicate balance between tradition and progress in Mexican culture during the festive season.
Embracing Trans Acceptance
One of the film’s heartfelt storylines spotlights a mother, portrayed by Mónica Dionne, who embarks on a poignant journey of acceptance when her trans daughter, Penelope, decides to join the family for Christmas dinner. Salma Hayek, an Oscar nominee and a prominent advocate for inclusivity, emphasized the importance of producing a project that resonates with the LGBTQ+ community while encouraging reflection and pride.
“We believe in projects that represent the community in the right way, but also make them think, make them feel proud of who we are,” Hayek stated in a recent interview. Addressing the significance of the trans plot, she added, “Sometimes when it’s a family member, you have to accept first, and then understand. But it’s important to go towards that second step so you’re not tolerating a loved one, but totally loving someone.”
A Universal Message of Love
The film’s screenwriter, Jose Tamez, who also serves as Hayek’s producing partner at Ventanarosa, shared his inspiration for the project. “I was trying to present three stories about love,” Tamez remarked, citing his own membership in the LGBTQ+ community. He believed that the tale of acceptance could resonate universally, regardless of an individual’s personal circumstances. Salma Hayek echoed this sentiment, declaring, “It’s a movie you can watch with both your transgender best friend and your mother.”
El Sabor de la Navidad promises to be a heartwarming and inclusive addition to the holiday season, carrying a vital message of love, acceptance, and understanding that transcends boundaries and unites diverse audiences.
