In the world of RuPaul’s Drag Race, drama is always just around the corner. And according to legendary queen Laganja Estranja, it’s the kind of drama that you just have to laugh at. During an appearance on Sissy That Talk Show, Laganja spilled the tea on some of the most memorable moments from her time on the show and beyond, including one hilarious incident involving fellow Drag Race alum Shangela.
As fans of the show will know, both Laganja and Shangela are members of the Haus of Edwards, a group created by fellow Drag Race competitor Alyssa Edwards. And while the group has had its fair share of ups and downs over the years, Laganja revealed that the drama was always of the fun variety.
But one incident in particular had Laganja in stitches. Apparently, the Haus was running late for a train (for “undisclosed reasons”), and Shangela had a brilliant idea to ensure they made it on time. “She decided to tell the ticket person that she was RuPaul, and that we had to make this train in order for us to get to our gig,” Laganja recounted. “And they made us put on a full show right there. The three of us did a full show. Like right there, so we could get our tickets to get on the plane.”
Of course, the mode of transport in question switches between plane and train in the retelling of the story, but as Laganja herself admitted, she was high during the interview, so some details might be fuzzy. Regardless, the incident remains a hilarious highlight of Laganja’s time in the Haus.
During the interview, Laganja also dished on one of the most iconic moments in Drag Race herstory: her own “I feel very attacked” breakdown. “It was my first and only panic attack I’ve ever had… but it became one of my biggest things,” she said. “I learned to laugh at myself and, instead of being the butt of the joke, I became the joke. And I made merch(andise), and I made money off of it.”
Laganja has since returned to Drag Race as a lip-sync assassin on All Stars 6, while Shangela has gone on to become one of the show’s most successful and beloved characters. She’s appeared on Dancing with the Stars and her own Emmy-winning HBO series We’re Here, alongside fellow queens Bob the Drag Queen and Eureka. But it’s clear that, for Laganja at least, some of the best memories from the Drag Race world involve the Haus of Edwards and their wild, hilarious antics.
