Country singer Shania Twain recently spoke out in support of the drag community and its artistry. In an interview with GLAAD, Twain expressed her love for drag shows, which she described as fun, inspiring, and courageous. The singer, who once served as a guest judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, also revealed that she draws fashion and makeup advice from drag queens, admiring their transformation skills.
However, the drag community is currently facing unprecedented attacks in the form of over 320 anti-LGBTQ+ bills proposed in the United States as of mid-February 2023. More than 30 of these bills specifically target drag performances, and some aim to criminalize cases where minors are exposed to shows. Critics argue that these bills are too broadly written and could lead to harassment against transgender people or criminalize their existence in public spaces.
One of the most prominent bills, recently passed in the Tennessee House, would forbid drag shows from operating within 1,000 feet of schools, public parks, or places of worship. Failure to comply could result in a felony.
Twain’s outspoken support of the drag community comes at a critical moment when the community is facing challenges from anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. She believes that drag queens have an important role to play in inspiring and uplifting others. “I think we need this inspiration; we need drag queens to share their talent with us,” she said.
As the drag community continues to face opposition, Shania Twain’s defense of its artistry and courage serves as a reminder of the community’s importance and resilience.
