In a recent episode of the Brotherly Love podcast, hosted by siblings Joey, Andrew, and Matthew Lawrence, the Boy Meets World star opened up about his own experience with sexual harassment in Hollywood. Matthew Lawrence emphasized the double standards in the #MeToo movement, highlighting the lack of support for male victims of sexual assault.
The Casting Couch: A Harrowing Encounter
Lawrence recounted a disturbing incident where his agency sent him to the hotel room of a high-profile, Oscar-winning director. Upon arrival, the director appeared in a robe and asked Lawrence to undress for Polaroid photos. He was told that if he complied and performed additional acts, he would be cast as the next Marvel character. When Lawrence refused, his agency dropped him.
Lawrence did not name the director or agency involved, but his story sheds light on the predatory behavior that persists in the film industry. He also criticized the complicity of agents, who often act as enablers for powerful figures in Hollywood.
The actor pointed out that the casting couch phenomenon is well-known but rarely discussed by male victims. He acknowledged that while women likely experience this type of harassment more frequently, men face it as well, whether from other men or women in power. Lawrence cited the example of Terry Crews, who was ridiculed and unsupported when he spoke out about being groped by a high-ranking Hollywood executive.
Society’s Reluctance to Acknowledge Male Victims
Lawrence argued that society is less willing to accept stories of male victims, particularly when they embody traditional masculinity. He called for greater awareness and support for all victims of sexual assault, regardless of gender.
By focusing on the shared experiences of male and female victims, the conversation around sexual harassment and assault can become more inclusive, ultimately leading to a safer and more equitable environment in Hollywood and beyond.
