American rock musician Ted Nugent’s farewell tour hit a roadblock when his Alabama concert was canceled due to recent “serious transphobic comments.” The former National Rifle Association board member and outspoken conservative was scheduled to perform at Avondale Brewing Company in Birmingham, Alabama, on July 18th. However, following social media backlash and opposition from Al’s on 7th, a local LGBTQ+ bar, the concert was called off.
Local LGBTQ+ Bar Withdraws Support
Al’s on 7th announced on social media that it would no longer support Avondale Brewing Company and would stop purchasing beer from both Avondale and Good People Brewing Company. The bar cited Nugent’s recent transphobic comments as the reason for their decision. In response, Avondale Brewing confirmed the concert’s cancellation a day before tickets were set to go on sale.
Nugent’s Transphobic Backlash Against Bud Light Campaign
Nugent’s transphobic comments have included harsh criticism of beer brand Bud Light’s partnership with influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The musician claimed that the brand giving Mulvaney a personalized beer can to celebrate her “100 days of womanhood” was disrespectful to the brand’s core consumer demographic. Nugent’s past anti-LGBTQ+ remarks also include an interview in which he expressed being “repulsed” by same-sex relationships, although he denied being homophobic.
Nugent Lashes Out After Cancellation
Following the cancellation of his Alabama show, Nugent took to Twitter, accusing his critics of being “liars and haters drunk on stupid.” Nugent has faced prior accusations of hate speech and inciting violence during his controversial career, making him no stranger to backlash and criticism.
