In a recent report titled “Future of Dating,” Tinder, the popular dating app, revealed intriguing insights into the experiences of LGBTQIA+ individuals. According to the study, a significant 54 percent of 18-25-year-olds who identify as LGBTQIA+ disclosed that they were out on a dating app before opening up to friends and family. This finding sheds light on the evolving dynamics of self-expression and the role technology plays in the lives of queer youth.
Moreover, the research indicates that the current generation of young singles embraces a more fluid approach to their sexuality and gender identity. Over the past three years, these aspects have become increasingly nuanced, highlighting the expanding spectrum of sexual orientations and gender expressions. Tinder recognizes the importance of supporting this diverse community and remains committed to providing inclusive spaces for genuine connections.
Melissa Hobley, Chief Marketing Officer at Tinder, expressed the company’s dedication to queer youth. She noted that the LGBTQIA+ membership aged 18-25 has more than doubled in the past two years, establishing this group as the fastest-growing population on Tinder. Hobley emphasized Tinder’s role in facilitating the journey from coming out to finding a supportive community. The app continues to develop inclusive features that align with the values cherished by today’s daters.
To commemorate Pride Month and honor its vibrant LGBTQ+ community, Tinder will introduce a new collection of profile stickers. These stickers serve as additional means for queer users and allies to connect with one another authentically. Among the offerings, the “My First Pride” sticker aims to assist first-time Pride attendees in finding like-minded individuals to share the transformative experience. Another sticker, titled “Came Out Online,” celebrates those who took their initial steps towards self-acceptance in the digital realm, echoing the sentiments echoed in the study.
Recognizing the significance of queer spaces, both online and offline, Tinder introduces the “Save Queer Spaces” sticker. This sticker underscores the vital role played by inclusive environments that foster acceptance and community-building. Additionally, the “Happy Pride” sticker commemorates the spirit of Pride Month, while the “Proud Ally” sticker emphasizes the importance of allyship and support for LGBTQ+ communities.
Throughout its history, Tinder has demonstrated its commitment to supporting its queer user base. In 2019, the app introduced a safety update that alerts LGBTQ+ users when traveling to over 70 countries where same-sex relations are criminalized. Last year, Tinder collaborated with the Human Rights Campaign in an initiative aimed at ending the discriminatory blood donation ban for gay and bisexual men.
Starting June 1, the new profile stickers will be available on the Tinder app. With these innovative features, Tinder continues to embrace the evolving landscape of LGBTQ+ dating and provides a platform for authentic connections and meaningful experiences.
