Trans nonbinary actor, Zoe Terakes, has been cast in the upcoming Marvel’s Ironheart series, marking a historic moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Despite their role being yet to be fully revealed, a casting call offered a glimpse of the character they will play, a “smart, confident, and mystical person with a unique sense of humor.”
In a recent interview with Collider, Terakes shared what it means to them to be the first trans actor in the MCU and their character in the series. “Growing up as a trans person, I didn’t see myself anywhere, not even in a superhero movie,” Terakes said. “I am grateful and moved that trans kids and teens have something to look up to and know that they exist, and that they can have superpowers. We belong with the big guys, not just on the fringes.”
Ironheart focuses on the character of Riri Williams, played by Dominique Thorne, a genius inventor who creates her own armor suit following in the footsteps of Ironman. Shea Couleé, Drag Race superstar, is also rumored to be cast in a mystery role in the upcoming series.
The comment about having “superpowers” has raised speculation among fans that Terakes’ character is indeed a superhero. Fans will have to wait until Ironheart debuts this fall to find out more.
