Transgender actress and LGBTQ+ activist Alexandra Billings, known for her roles in TV shows like Transparent and The Conners, is set to share her life journey on the Broadway stage. Billings is preparing for an industrial workshop in March for her autobiographical musical, ‘S/He and Me,’ which will eventually make its way to Broadway. The musical will chronicle Billings’s life from her youth when being transgender was not widely recognized or accepted, through her struggles with drug addiction, sex work, and homelessness, to her transition, success in show business, and a happy marriage.
A Journey of Resilience and Acceptance
In a press release, Billings reflected on the impact such a show could have had on her younger self, saying, “I know that when I was 12 years old, had there been a show like this, it would have saved me three separate suicide attempts.” Her story is a powerful reminder of the responsibility to share stories that resonate with truth, transcending the boundaries of gender identity. Billings, who has been acting since 1968, has made significant contributions to the LGBTQ+ and AIDS activism, even moderating a panel on transgender rights at the White House during President Barack Obama’s administration.
A Love Story Transcending All
‘S/He and Me’ will be directed by Joanne Gordon, Billings’s longtime collaborator and co-author of her memoir, ‘This Time for Me.’ Gordon described the musical as a love story that transcends gender, time, and place, celebrating the love between two individuals, Alex and Chrisanne, while also reflecting on self-love. The musical pays homage to the Broadway and Hollywood musicals that inspired Billings during her formative years.
