The United Methodist Church (UMC) is currently experiencing a significant schism, with over 7,000 congregations, a quarter of the total in the U.S., facing a pivotal decision: to stay within the denomination or to part ways. This division stems from deep-rooted theological disagreements and divergent views on the inclusion of LGBTQ members and clergy.
For many years, the UMC has grappled with internal conflicts over its stance on LGBTQ issues. The church officially prohibits same-sex marriages and the ordination of openly LGBTQ clergy. These longstanding policies have led to increasing defiance and tension within the denomination, particularly in the United States.
Emergence of the Global Methodist Church
In response to the UMC’s policies, a number of conservative factions within the church have initiated the formation of the Global Methodist Church (GMC). This new denomination adheres to more traditional views and has attracted many congregations dissatisfied with the UMC’s approach to LGBTQ issues. Simultaneously, progressive elements within the UMC are gearing up to challenge and potentially overturn these bans at the denomination’s next General Conference in 2024.
A Church at a Crossroads
The exodus of congregations began in earnest in 2019, following a decision by a special legislative General Conference to reinforce the UMC’s bans on same-sex marriage and LGBTQ clergy. This decision also opened a five-year window, allowing churches to leave the denomination with their properties, under certain conditions. The departures escalated during this year’s series of annual conference meetings, with some regional bodies losing significant numbers of churches.
The split is not just at the conference level; it cuts through the very fabric of individual congregations, often dividing members who have worshipped together for years. While many departing churches are joining the GMC, others are exploring different affiliations or choosing to become independent, a reflection of the diverse reactions and beliefs within the Methodist community.
This schism in the UMC highlights the ongoing challenges and debates faced by religious institutions worldwide regarding LGBTQ inclusion and acceptance. The outcome of this division will likely have lasting impacts on the UMC and its global community.
