In a triumphant celebration of drag culture, RuPaul’s DragCon 2023 took center stage at the Los Angeles Convention Center, defying threats and spreading a powerful message of inclusivity. Presented by RuPaul and World of Wonder Productions, this two-day event drew thousands of drag babies, legends, and fans from all walks of life, emphasizing that drag is here to slay.
Since its inception in 2015, RuPaul’s DragCon has provided a platform for the art of drag, queer culture, and self-expression, uniting people from around the world. This year, the convention showcased over 70 confirmed international queens, with performers hailing from the Philippines, Spain, the Netherlands, Canada, and France. The Los Angeles Times reported that the convention floor buzzed with excitement as Ts Madison hosted “Bring Back My Girls,” one of World of Wonder’s hit shows, live from the venue.
The main convention hall was ablaze with live events featuring renowned drag icons such as Bianca Del Rio and Jaida Essence Hall. RuPaul himself graced the main stage with two electrifying DJ sets, while a star-studded lineup including the Teletubbies, Baga Chipz, Shea Couleé, and many more dazzled the crowd with their unforgettable performances.
The highlight of the weekend was the grand opening of the pink carpet runway, where queens strutted their stuff, captivating eager fans who had eagerly secured their spots. This spectacle provided a chance to witness the queens up close before they retreated to their booths, where devotees could meet them for a merchandise purchase of $30 or more.
Amidst the glitz and glamour, the convention floor was adorned with booths offering an array of products, from shoes and wigs to makeup and jewelry, catering to every drag enthusiast’s needs. Micky’s WeHo, a key sponsor, occupied a prominent double booth near the entrance, offering makeup makeovers, photo ops, and pulsating beats by DJ Paulo. Drag queens also graced the Micky’s booth for meet and greets, adding an extra touch of excitement to the event.
Local West Hollywood queens added their own flair to DragCon 2023, including the likes of Selinas Estities, Morgan McMichaels, and Willam. These extraordinary performers, alongside a host of others, enchanted attendees with their mesmerizing talents and magnetic personalities.
Love Connie, a guest from the most recent season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, sashayed down the pink carpet in her signature Love Connie fashion, promoting Cash App as one of the sponsors. Expressing her enthusiasm for the event, she playfully remarked, “I love this event. I believe I’m allergic to the pink carpet fibers, but I’ll survive.”
RuPaul’s Drag Race, MTV, and World of Wonder joined forces with the ACLU this year, proudly contributing to “The Drag Defense Fund” in support of the ACLU’s tireless work for LGBTQ+ rights. Fans had the opportunity to make tax-deductible donations to this vital cause through the Dragcon website.
RuPaul’s DragCon 2023 emerged as a testament to the resilience and vibrancy of the drag community, sending a resounding message of empowerment and acceptance. This extraordinary event continues to showcase the transformative power of drag, igniting hope and fostering unity among all who embrace the kaleidoscope of identities within the LGBTQ+ spectrum.
