TL;DR

  • Nine gay-themed films put the enemies-to-lovers formula front and center.
  • The list includes titles starring Alexander Lincoln, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Josh O’Connor, Joel Kim Booster and Billy Eichner.
  • Streaming options range from Prime Video and Hulu to Tubi, Freeform and Netflix.

There is a reason enemies-to-lovers stories keep finding an audience: the friction, the shifting power dynamic and the eventual surrender to attraction make for an easy hook. Queer viewers have helped keep that appetite alive, from BL dramas such as My Personal Weatherman and The New Employee to feature films built around men who begin as rivals and end up much closer.

For anyone looking for a movie night built around that arc, these nine films offer different versions of the same appeal, along with where to watch them.

In From The Side

Strand Releasing’s British romance centers on rugby players Mark Newton, played by Alexander Lincoln, and Warren, played by Alexander King. Their rivalry gives way to a secret affair.

God's Own Country

The film helped cement Josh O’Connor as a breakout presence for many viewers. He plays Johnny Saxby, a farmer living a bleak life until Romanian migrant worker Gheorghe, played by Alec Secăreanu, arrives. Their clashes eventually turn sexual.

Where to watch: Prime Video

Fire Island

Inspired by Pride and Prejudice, this Hulu title gives the classic rivals-to-lovers structure a gay update. Noah, played by Joel Kim Booster, begins the film at odds with wealthy, aloof Will, played by Conrad Ricamora, before their connection deepens.

Eismayer

Based on a true story, this drama follows Sergeant Major Charles Eismayer, played by Gerhard Liebmann, a strict Austrian military drill instructor who secretly lives as a gay man. The tension rises when Mario Falak, played by Luka Dimić, an openly gay recruit, resists his command.

The Thing About Harry

Freeform’s rom-com stars Jake Borelli as Sam, who is forced to share a ride with his former school rival Harry, played by Niko Terho, on the way to a mutual friend’s engagement party. During the trip, Sam learns that Harry is pan.

Where to watch: Tubi

Bros

Universal Pictures’ romantic comedy stars Billy Eichner as Bobby, a sharp-tongued podcaster who develops a relationship with Aaron, played by Luke Macfarlane. What starts as awkward attraction settles into something more tender.

Where to watch: Netflix

10Dance

This Netflix title leans especially hard into the competitive setup. Shinya Suzuki, played by Ryoma Takeuchi, is the Japanese champion of Latin dance and is repeatedly compared with rival dancer Shinya Sugiki, played by Keita Machida, the Japanese champion and second-ranked Standard Ballroom dancer. When they join forces, the rivalry turns into erotic attraction.

Where to watch: Netflix

Whether the setting is a rugby field, a military base or a ballroom, these films all use competition as a path to desire. That structure has made enemies-to-lovers one of the most durable queer romance formulas on screen.
