The Colchester Kings rugby club, founded in 2022, has emerged as a beacon of inclusivity in East Anglia’s sporting community. Established as a safe space for players from diverse backgrounds, particularly from the LGBTQ+ community, the team is expanding its reach after what founder Sam Biscoe described as a “stonking” first season.
The club’s success lies not just in its sporting achievements but in its social impact. Many players, previously hesitant to step onto the pitch due to past experiences of exclusion or bullying, have found not just a team but a family. “It’s led to some people figuring out that they can actually do stuff that they didn’t allow themselves to do before,” said Biscoe. This sentiment is echoed by field captain Tom Crudgington, who rediscovered his passion for rugby after a decade-long hiatus.
This year, the club will host recruitment sessions in Ipswich, Chelmsford, and Colchester, aiming to make rugby more accessible to those who may have previously felt sidelined. In addition, the launch of a mixed-gender touch rugby team marks another step towards breaking down traditional barriers in sports.
The Colchester Kings’ story is more than just about rugby; it’s about representation, belonging, and creating a community where every individual feels valued. In a region where such initiatives are still rare, the club’s efforts set a powerful example. As more players join the Kings, the pitch becomes not just a field of competition but a ground for change.
