Former basketball player Dwyane Wade has once again displayed his unwavering allyship, assisting his trans daughter in achieving legal recognition for her chosen name. According to court documents, 15-year-old Zaya Wade is now legally recognized as Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade after Wade helped her file paperwork in August 2022.
Wade first revealed his daughter’s trans identity in 2020 during an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, where he expressed his unconditional love and support for her. Throughout Zaya’s public transition, Wade’s ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, has made accusations of Wade trying to profit from their daughter’s journey. However, Zaya was able to move forward without any issues as her consent was not required for the court filings.
In response to the allegations, Wade posted an Instagram message stating that they were “serious and harmful” and had “hurt our children.” He expressed disappointment that his ex-wife had centered herself and her needs without regard for their children. Despite having access to Zaya and her support network, Funches-Wade was reportedly unwilling to reach out.
Wade’s allyship and support for his daughter highlight the importance of family acceptance and unconditional love for trans youth. By assisting Zaya in achieving legal recognition for her chosen name, Wade has demonstrated that being a supportive parent means advocating for and standing up for your child’s identity, no matter what.
