In a star-studded gala held at NeueHouse Hollywood on October 28, GLSEN, a prominent LGBTQIA+ advocacy organization, raised over $100,000 to support LGBTQIA+ students in K-12 schools. The event honored gay country musician Orville Peck with GLSEN’s Champion Award and acclaimed actress Annette Benning with its Advocate Award.
Emceed by drag performer Mo Heart, the gala set the tone for the night by emphasizing the ongoing fight for safe and affirming school environments for queer youth. Mo Heart stated, “GLSEN has been instrumental in transforming our nation’s schools to make sure that they are a safe and an affirming environment that all youth deserve.”
Orville Peck, known for his critically acclaimed albums, expressed his wish for the resources provided by GLSEN during his upbringing in South Africa and Canada, emphasizing the importance of safe spaces and support for LGBTQIA+ youth during their formative years.
Annette Benning, who has gained attention for her role in the biopic “Nyad” about lesbian swimmer Diane Nyad, passionately spoke about her advocacy for LGBTQ equality, influenced by her experience raising a trans son. She also highlighted the challenges faced by trans children and their parents in states that are criminalizing trans health care.
The gala featured musical performances, celebrity appearances, and testimonials from students impacted by GLSEN’s programs. Attendees collectively pledged over $108,000 toward GLSEN’s work in schools.
GLSEN Executive Director Melanie Willingham-Jaggers emphasized the importance of the fundraiser in building community networks for legal and political battles ahead, underscoring the organization’s commitment to ensuring safe classrooms for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
