In an era where inclusivity in sports is becoming more visible, the Colchester Kings, East Anglia’s pioneering LGBTQ+-inclusive rugby club, are making strides both on and off the field. Established in 2022, the club was founded with the mission to create a safe and welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ individuals who wish to play rugby without fear of judgment or exclusion.
The team’s founder, Sam Biscoe, emphasized the transformative effect the club has had on its players. “We had a remarkable first season. Some players joined us after years of avoiding sports due to past bullying or the absence of representation in traditional clubs,” he explained. The Colchester Kings have not only become a space for athletic engagement but also a hub for friendship and personal growth.

Field captain Tom Crudgington echoed this sentiment. After a decade-long hiatus from rugby, he found a renewed passion through the Kings. “Starting something new as an adult, especially a team sport, can be intimidating. But here, it felt natural,” he shared. Crudgington’s experience underscores how inclusive spaces can empower individuals to reconnect with passions once thought lost.
The club is now looking to expand its reach, holding taster sessions in Chelmsford and Ipswich this January. Additionally, their recently launched mixed-gender touch rugby squad will enter a league this year, further cementing the Kings’ role as a leader in inclusive sports.
Beyond the pitch, the Colchester Kings exemplify the broader impact of inclusive sports initiatives on the LGBTQ+ community. These environments are not merely about fitness or competition but about dismantling societal barriers and creating visible representation in traditionally rigid spaces. As the club prepares for another promising year, its story stands as a testament to the power of inclusive spaces in transforming lives—one match at a time.
