Marina Machete, the newly crowned Miss Portugal, has a remarkable story of resilience and determination that has taken her from a private life to the international stage of Miss Universe. Before her pageant victory, Marina kept her transgender identity a closely guarded secret, even from her colleagues. This decision was born out of a desire to protect herself, as she had faced bullying during her school years and as a young adult.
Marina’s life took a turn when she was inadvertently outed during her college years, an experience that influenced her decision to keep her gender identity hidden in the workplace. She wanted her colleagues to see her as “Marina,” not as a stereotype of transgender people. After representing Portugal in this year’s Miss Universe competition, Marina is excited to return to her job as a flight attendant, feeling empowered by her groundbreaking win.
Marina’s historic victory as Miss Portugal on October 5th in Borba, Portugal, marked a significant moment for the LGBTQ+ community. She went on to participate in the Miss Universe competition, where her presence alongside 83 other contestants sent a powerful message of inclusivity and equal opportunity for trans women. Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua ultimately won the title, but Marina left with lifelong friendships and the satisfaction of having created a more accepting space.
