Middle school students in Seattle have taken a stand against the local Moms for Liberty chapter, urging the group to “stop bullying and excluding LGBTQ+ youth and their families.” The students expressed their support for LGBTQ+ individuals through handwritten cards adorned with rainbow flags, hearts, peace signs, stickers, and colorful markers.
The cards were shared on the official Moms for Liberty Twitter account, where they received mixed reactions. Some followers expressed outrage and called for teachers and organizers to be fired or jailed, while others applauded the middle schoolers for standing up for their beliefs and human rights.
One card read, “Love is love & ur wrong! Grow up! I’m more mature than you.” Another stated, “Gay is slay. Stop being a rat,” and a third simply said, “I say gay.” Accompanying the photos of the cards was a caption from a Moms for Liberty team member accusing Seattle public schools of “spending class time indoctrinating and weaponizing your children.”
However, some users pointed out that the letters had not been written during class hours but were part of an extracurricular club activity. They clarified that the cards were created as part of Genders & Sexualities Alliances (GSAs), student-run organizations that unite LGBTQ+ and allied youth to build community and address issues impacting them in their schools and communities.
The letters from the middle school students come in response to Moms for Liberty’s efforts to prevent what they perceive as “woke indoctrination” and “grooming” of children in schools. The group has campaigned for book bans, spread homophobic messaging, and joined local school boards to influence class curriculums.
Moms for Liberty, which describes itself as a parental rights group, has grown rapidly, with over 300 local chapters across 48 states. This recent development follows the revelation that an outreach leader for a Moms for Liberty chapter in Philadelphia was a registered sex offender who had served time in prison for sexual abuse involving a 14-year-old boy.
