London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, recently spoke out about the importance of LGBTQ+ specific venues in the wake of the announcement of G-A-Y Late’s permanent closure. In a conversation with GAY TIMES, Khan acknowledged the significance of safe spaces for the LGBTQ+ community and expressed his sadness over the closure of G-A-Y Late, a renowned establishment.
“I fully understand the importance of LGBTQ+ specific venues,” Khan stated. “I understand why people need a safe space, the empowering impact it has in relation to minority communities, and so I was really sad when Jeremy Joseph announced the closure of G-A-Y Late.”
Jeremy Joseph, the owner of G-A-Y Late, took to social media to announce the venue’s closure, citing various reasons, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, security concerns, and ongoing construction issues. Khan, along with Night Czar Amy Lamé, is actively working to support venues facing similar challenges.
“Unfortunately, the combination of the pandemic, rising energy costs, and increased rents has made it difficult for venue owners,” Khan explained. “Amy is working incredibly hard with my team to make sure we keep what we’ve got.”
Khan also emphasized the broader significance of these venues, noting that LGBTQIA+ individuals from across the country come to London for the safety and acceptance these spaces provide. He underscored the responsibility of preserving these venues for the entire LGBTQ+ community.
Despite the closure of G-A-Y Late, Jeremy Joseph assured patrons that the venue’s staff would not be affected. They will be redeployed to other LGBTQ+ venues owned by Joseph, including the G-A-Y bar on Old Compton Street and Heaven nightclub in Charing Cross. Joseph also revealed plans to recreate an updated version of G-A-Y Late in Heaven, offering more nights and increased accessibility.
As the vibrant LGBTQ+ scene faces challenges, Sadiq Khan and his team remain committed to ensuring these essential safe spaces continue to thrive, recognizing their crucial role in supporting the LGBTQ+ community in London and beyond.
