In the heart of Washington, D.C., a city renowned for its diversity and culture, a remarkable transformation is unfolding as Thurst Lounge prepares to make its debut in early December 2023. In a city that boasts a rich plurality, it’s striking that until now, there has been a void—a lack of Black-owned-and-operated queer bars. However, Thurst Lounge, co-founded by Brandon Burke and Shaun Mykals, is set to change that narrative.
A Love Letter to the Black Queer Community
Burke and Mykals, both members of the LGBTQ+ community, share a profound vision for Thurst Lounge. They describe it as their “love letter to D.C.’s Black queer community,” an establishment that seeks to represent and honor the unique and culturally rich experiences of Black gay individuals.
Located on 14th Street, within the premises of the former Sakerum restaurant just north of U Street, Thurst Lounge promises to be a vibrant two-story haven. It will offer not only food and drinks but also an array of music and vibes that reflect the diversity of its patrons. Notably, the absence of a Black-owned space catering to D.C.’s queer community since the closure of The Bachelor’s Mill in 2021 underscores the significance of Thurst Lounge’s arrival.
From Humble Beginnings to Empowering Spaces
Brandon Burke and Shaun Mykals embarked on their journey in the nightlife scene over a decade ago with Thursday Bliss: An Open Mic Experience. What began as a one-time event for their musician friends quickly evolved into a weekly fixture. Although Thursday Bliss initially wasn’t created for a queer audience, they soon discovered that the LGBTQ+ community provided unwavering support.
While their event grew in popularity, Burke and Mykals, as members of the LGBTQ+ community, often experienced discomfort and uneven service at straight-owned bars and event spaces. This prompted them to recognize the necessity of creating a space where they and others like them could feel truly welcomed and embraced.
A True LGBTQ+ Space
As Mykals, a singer and musician, embraced a more prominent role within the LGBTQ+ community, he realized the importance of being vocal about his identity. This transformation was essential in the evolution of Thurst Lounge into a genuine LGBTQ+ space.
Burke echoed this sentiment, noting that embracing their identity as a gay space opened up opportunities and garnered them a growing audience. It became evident that people were drawn to authenticity and connecting with those who lived their truth.
A Symbol of Unity and Culture
Thurst Lounge, with its signature purple hue inspired by African cultures as a symbol of royalty, seeks to elevate the bar’s ambiance while paying homage to historical references. The establishment is keen on preserving history and culture, with photos of Black gay activists and heroes adorning the staircase.
Upstairs, iconic Black divas and performers like Whitney Houston, Beyonce, and Rihanna grace the space, a tribute to their monumental influence on Black culture. The bathrooms themselves honor the legacy of DC Black Pride, featuring photos and posters of those instrumental in the annual event.
A Welcoming Community Space
Thurst Lounge is not just a bar; it’s a community space dedicated to fostering connections. The establishment has already begun partnering with organizations like the Gay Men’s Health Alliance to host events and fundraisers. In addition to drag shows and other weekly parties, Thurst Lounge will serve small plates and appetizers, complemented by a focus on drinks, including beer, wine, and craft cocktails.
As it opens its doors Wednesday through Sunday, with extended hours on Friday and Saturday nights, Thurst Lounge stands as a testament to resilience and inclusivity. In a city as diverse as Washington, D.C., this new establishment aims to celebrate and honor the vibrant LGBTQ+ community, particularly the Black queer individuals who have long awaited a place to call their own. Thurst Lounge is poised to be more than just a bar; it is a beacon of unity, culture, and acceptance.
