Suranne Jones, known for her dynamic performances, is set to return as detective Amy Silva in season two of the acclaimed BBC series ‘Vigil’ this December. The former Coronation Street star, celebrated for her portrayal of Regency-era lesbian Anne Lister in ‘Gentleman Jack,’ and her role as Amy Silva in ‘Vigil,’ reflects on the significance of LGBTQ+ roles and her connection with the community.
In ‘Vigil’ season one, Jones’ character, Amy, was embroiled in deep-sea intrigue following a mysterious death on the military submarine HMS Vigil. In the upcoming second season, she and her onscreen partner, DI Kirsten Longacre (played by Rose Leslie), confront a new challenge: investigating multiple fatalities resulting from a weapons test crucial to securing a multi-billion dollar arms deal in the Middle East.
At a special screening of the season two opener at BFI Southbank on November 27, Jones discussed her affinity for playing queer characters and the special bond she has developed with the LGBTQ+ community.
“I think you’re drawn to the role, drawn to the character, you’re drawn to what that person can give you and you can give to the person. So that’s the first thing,” she stated.
Jones elaborated on how her perspective changed when she encountered an “open and wonderful” queer fanbase while working on ‘Gentleman Jack.’ She was deeply moved by the welcoming and sharing nature of this community.
She emphasized, “So I think by doing that particular job and then this one I’ve been very welcomed as an ally, and I take it very seriously.”
In a Q&A session, co-star Rose Leslie added that both she and Jones ensured there was LGBTQ+ representation within the writer’s room during the filming of season two. This choice aimed to authentically portray their characters’ loving relationship, emphasizing that their sexuality does not define their characters.
‘Vigil’ made waves with its first season in 2021, becoming the most-watched new BBC drama in three years, attracting an impressive audience of 13 million for its season opener. The series secured a BAFTA nomination for Best Drama and won an International Emmy for Best Drama series.
Fans can catch up on ‘Vigil’ season one on BBC iPlayer, and the highly anticipated season two returns on Sunday, December 10, at 9 pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
