Netflix has announced the release of its second season of “The Ultimatum,” a reality dating show that features all-queer couples. In contrast to the painfully cis heterosexual dating shows, “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” promises to showcase more stories of love, relationships, and the ups and downs of commitment with brutal honesty.
The show revolves around five LGBTQ+ couples and will feature heavy drama as each couple hits a crossroads in their relationship. The season’s premise centers on one partner being ready for marriage while the other may have doubts, ultimately leading to the issuance of an ultimatum. The couples will have just over eight weeks to decide whether to get married or part ways and choose new potential partners, providing a glimpse of two different futures.
The new season, set to drop on May 24th, will feature lesbian, bisexual, and non-binary individuals, bringing much-needed sapphic representation to reality dating shows. JoAnna García Swisher, star of “Sweet Magnolias,” will host the show, replacing Nick and Vanessa Lachey from the first season.
The trailer for the second season is already creating buzz among fans, as it promises to be just as messy as the first. The teaser trailer shows contestants going through the highs and lows of seeing their loved ones dating other people right in front of them. Some contestants are looking to start a family, while some want to wait five years before tying the knot. Others appear to change their minds about getting married at all, with one contestant even saying, “I don’t want permanency, I don’t want stability, I want freedom.”
Fans are ecstatic about the representation of queer women on a trashy dating show, with one writing, “The fact that we’re getting The Ultimatum with queer women literally made me cry. I never thought I’d see the day we’d have our own trashy dating show.” Another shared, “I’m so here for The Ultimatum: Queer Love! I’m excited for my mom to see why this representation is not only important but equally entertaining!”
Overall, “The Ultimatum: Queer Love” is a show that has been long-awaited, promising to provide much-needed representation for the LGBTQ+ community and a glimpse into the complex realities of queer relationships.
