The flags, symbolizing inclusivity and acceptance, were proudly displayed outside the Lumen Gallery, an esteemed home decor boutique and art gallery. The thefts, believed to be targeted acts, occurred on separate occasions in broad daylight, leaving the community both baffled and concerned.
According to the owner of Lumen Gallery, Cierra Ryczek, the thefts unfolded in a distressing manner. One incident involved a group of individuals, reportedly adolescents, who donned masks before absconding with a flag. The following day, another flag was discovered missing. Despite bystanders voicing their disapproval, the culprits managed to evade any immediate intervention.
Capitola Police Captain, Sarah Ryan, confirmed that the investigation is centered on the apparent targeting of these LGBTQ+ Pride flags. The thefts, she stated, seem isolated with no similar actions against other flags adorning the vicinity. To address this concerning trend, the police department has intensified surveillance around the gallery’s location on Capitola Avenue.
