Oscar McGregor, a London-based trans man and model, is speaking out about the need for greater inclusivity in the period industry. McGregor believes that while the industry is making strides towards inclusivity for gender-diverse people, there is still much work to be done. As a queer trans man, McGregor finds the narrative around menstruation to be “extremely dysmorphic” and exclusive to traditional notions of femininity.
McGregor’s recent partnership with absorbent apparel brand Modibodi on its new All Gender Collection, which includes the company’s first-ever period briefs that are able to accommodate a packer, is a step in the right direction for the industry. However, McGregor notes that there is a need for period products to be less gendered and for brands to be more inclusive of all genders who experience periods.
He believes that the period industry has the potential to create wide-ranging change in terms of inclusivity. By speaking openly about periods within the LGBTQIA+ community, the industry can help to break down societal taboos and raise awareness around the need for menstrual inclusion for all bodies and genders.
McGregor’s advocacy also extends to the lack of bins in men’s toilets to dispose of period products, which can make it difficult for trans men and non-binary people to use public restrooms during their period. He urges friends of trans men to be allies by not questioning their use of period-care products or their discomfort with periods in general.
