Hannah Gadsby, the global star known for their subversive Netflix special, Nanette, is set to release their third comedy special on the streaming platform. The comedian, who uses they/them pronouns, will debut their new show, Something Special, on May 9th.
Filmed at the Sydney Opera House in 2022 and directed by Hannah’s spouse, Jenney Shamash, the show promises to bring some feel-good comedy to viewers. However, the special isn’t just about the laughs; Hannah will also discuss their recent marriage at length.
In 2021, Hannah married their “spouse lady,” Jenney Shamash, in Australia. During a recent performance at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Hannah revealed that the process of getting married was a “steep learning curve” for the couple. “Neither one of us have spent any moment of our entire lives dreaming and fantasizing about our most special day,” Hannah said. “I grew up in a time when us gays weren’t even allowed to adopt a highway, much less marry someone we wanted to touch.”
Hannah and Jenney’s wedding was anything but traditional. The couple had a great white shark-shaped cake with two otters holding hands in the shark’s mouth as their topper. While the novelty cake may have upset some people, it was a fun way for the couple to celebrate their love.
In addition to discussing their marriage, Hannah also spoke about their spouse’s bisexuality, saying that they enjoy mentioning it to upset a particular type of man. “Some people have asked and said, ‘Aren’t you worried that your bisexual wife will run off with a man?’ No. Have you met men?” Hannah quipped.
Overall, Something Special promises to be another insightful and humorous look at life through the eyes of Hannah Gadsby.
