The 19th edition of the Pan American Games is currently underway in Santiago, Chile, and the event is making history not only in terms of sports but also in promoting LGBTQ inclusivity. With over 6,900 athletes representing 40 nations, the games are a crucial step in the lead-up to Paris 2024, offering Olympic quota spots.
Santiago’s Pan Am Games marks the first time the event has been held in Chile, a nation ranked as the 10th most LGBTQ-friendly in the world by Equaldex. The opening ceremony set a welcoming tone as openly gay 3×3 basketball player Daniel Arcos proudly hoisted a Pride flag. This gesture received an enthusiastic response from both fellow Team Chile athletes and the stadium crowd.
Among the LGBTQ athletes competing is Tomas Gonzalez, a three-time Olympian and gold medalist in floor exercise at the last Pan Am Games in Lima. Gonzalez publicly came out earlier this year while promoting his autobiography, ‘Champion,’ in an interview with national newspaper La Tercera.
The Pan Am Games in Santiago boast a diverse representation of LGBTQ athletes, including Ana Marcela Cunha, Todd Harrity, Bryden Hattie, Florence Maheu, Jorge Luis Martinez, Arthur Nory Mariano, Ana Patricia, Hannah Roberts, Alena Sharp, Rafaela Silva, and Erica Sullivan. These athletes proudly showcase their talents and identities, contributing to the inclusive spirit of the games.
As the Pan Am Games continue to unfold, the world watches as Santiago celebrates athleticism, diversity, and LGBTQ representation on a global stage.
