Unite for a Cause Each year, West Hollywood stands in solidarity with the global community to observe World AIDS Day. Originating from the 1988 United Nations World Summit of Ministers of Health, the day serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS. It is a moment for people worldwide to come together in support of those living with HIV and to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives due to the virus.
“Let Communities Lead” This year’s World AIDS Day theme, “Let Communities Lead,” underscores the pivotal role played by community-led interventions in the fight against AIDS. The City of West Hollywood, through its events and initiatives, highlights the importance of community-driven efforts to bring an end to AIDS.
Honoring AIDS Warriors One of the key events during this commemoration is the 23rd Annual Paul Andrew Starke Warrior Awards, taking place on November 30. The event recognizes outstanding employees or volunteers from local agencies dedicated to providing HIV/AIDS and substance abuse prevention and care services. Cathy Reback, Ph.D., Founder and Executive Director of Friends Community Center, will be the keynote speaker and receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. The event is open to the public, reflecting the community’s commitment to acknowledging those who tirelessly serve in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
AIDSWatch and Candlelight Procession On December 1, AIDSWatch, an electronic memorial to people lost to HIV and AIDS, will be viewable online and on the City of West Hollywood’s WeHoTV channels for 24 hours. In the evening, the city will join STORIES: The AIDS Monument and APLA Health for a candlelight procession starting at the West Hollywood Park Aquatic and Recreation Center. The event will include a screening of the 2023 documentary “Commitment to Life,” highlighting the city’s enduring dedication to the cause.
The City of West Hollywood’s steadfast commitment to HIV/AIDS awareness and support has earned it recognition as a model for other cities around the world. From its early social services grants to its pioneering AIDS awareness campaigns, West Hollywood continues to lead in the battle against HIV/AIDS.
