Minnesota congresswoman Angie Craig was the victim of an assault in the elevator of her Washington, D.C., apartment building on Tuesday morning. The attack resulted in Craig being left bruised and the assailant fleeing when she called 911. The Hill reports that Craig’s chief of staff spoke to the media and stated that the attack does not appear to be politically motivated, but police are currently investigating.
Senator Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota has also confirmed the attack, stating that she is “shocked and saddened” to hear of the assault. Craig’s attacker, a 26-year-old man, is now in custody after being accused of punching Craig and grabbing her by the neck. Fortunately, the congresswoman was able to defend herself by throwing hot coffee at the man.
When elected in 2018 to represent the suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Craig became the first lesbian mother to be elected to Congress. She is now the chair of the Congressional Equality Caucus. The investigation into the assault is ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
