Actor Joe Locke has been confirmed to play Wiccan, a young gay superhero in the upcoming Disney+ show, Agatha: Coven of Chaos. This is the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s roster of LGBTQ+ characters.
Wiccan, also known as Billy, is one of Marvel’s most popular young gay superheroes. He was first introduced in the comics in 2005 as the son of Scarlet Witch and Vision. Fans have been eagerly anticipating his debut in the MCU for a long time.
Locke’s casting was initially speculated by fans when he was announced to join the cast of Agatha. The confirmation came from a stunt double listing for the show, which revealed Locke will be playing Billy/Wiccan.
The upcoming show is a spinoff of WandaVision and follows the character Agatha Harkness, played by Kathryn Hahn. Patti LuPone, who plays a witch named Lilia Calderu in the series, recently mentioned that Locke would be playing a witch’s familiar in the show. However, it is unclear if Billy will be serving as the familiar for his mother’s enemies or if there’s a multiverse twist involved.
Wiccan’s introduction to the MCU is another step forward for LGBTQ+ representation in superhero media. It is heartening to see more diverse characters being introduced and played by actors who identify with the community they represent. Fans are eagerly awaiting Locke’s debut in the show and the further expansion of LGBTQ+ characters in the MCU.
Agatha: Coven of Chaos is currently in production and is set to premiere on Disney+ at a yet-to-be-announced date.
