The highly-anticipated queer animated film “Nimona” is set to make its debut on Netflix this June, just in time for Pride Month. Based on the graphic novel by ND Stevenson, creator of “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power,” the film follows the adventures of the titular shapeshifting girl, voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz.
From Reluctant Partnership to Powerful Team
Nimona signs up to be the sidekick of Ballister Blackheart, a reluctant supervillain played by Riz Ahmed. Initially, Blackheart is hesitant to accept Nimona’s help, but he soon realizes that she could be the key to clearing his name after he’s been labeled a villain and enemy of the state.
Breaking Boundaries and Defying Labels
The official synopsis highlights the film’s exploration of societal labels and the power of self-definition: “A Knight is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.”
A Star-Studded Cast
In addition to Moretz and Ahmed, the voice cast of “Nimona” includes Eugene Lee Yang, Frances Conroy, Lorraine Toussaint, RuPaul Charles, Indya Moore, Beck Bennet, Julio Torres, and Sarah Sherman. With its unique setting, engaging storyline, and LGBT themes, “Nimona” is sure to captivate audiences when it premieres on Netflix this Pride Month.
